[Drama Review] Mei Ren Zhi Zao 美人制造 Beauty Maker 2014

This drama released at the end of 2014 is produced by the infamous Yu Zheng Production team. Yumama, the producer, is knows in the C-entertainment for stealing ideas from other writers, doing shady things under the table and is bad preparation for his dramas. However, I personnally think he has some skills to make most of his drama unbelievably addictive to watch. Of course, I like many others hate some of his bad decisions, including doing the parody of BubuJinXin without permission (yes I am talking about the ultra popular C-drama The Palace starring Yang Mi and Willam Feng) and his bad choice of casting (yes again, I am referring to the choice of Michelle Chen to play eternal beauty Xiao Long Nu in the newest adatation of the Return of the Condor Heroes). Argh… Those love and hate relations.

On the bright side, Beauty Maker was a purely fun and enjoyable drama and I give Yumama extra points for doing so well without creating scandales.

30 Episodes drama

PLOT (source dramawiki) :

When He Lan Jun (Jin Shi Jia) had failed to turn up and meet the Empress to treat her skin problem, his position as an imperial doctor was given to his new and cunning student, Pei Yun Tian (Zhang Zhe Han), along with his house and fortune. While on the streets, he then runs into Su Lian Yi (Yang Rong), a girl he had met 5 years ago as a result of a one-night-stand and she quickly agrees to take him in. Believing that his skills as a doctor will one day help him regain his title back, He Lan Jun starts up his own clinic with Su Lian Yi as his main supporter, and with Pei Yun Tian as his new and only rival. Together, the three would find themselves being involved in a series of events which would either cause He Lan Jun to permanently lose his status to Pei Yun Tian, or make him one step closer to beating his former student who had the desire to rise above him.

Jin Shi Jia became really popular after playing the lead in very appreciated iAppartment during the first season. However, he left the series very soon and rebecame relevant only recently with his lead role as He Lan Jun in Beauty Maker. He plays a guffy plastic surgeon (in Ancient time!) who does not care about others, only about himself. He first works for the empress Wu Zetian, but because of conspiracy, was kicked out of the palace. As the story goes on, he learns to help others, trust them and fall in love. It is totally a lovable character and until the end, we feel like his character is still developping and reaching new understanding of life. Jin Shi Jia’s acting was especially approriate to play He Lan Jun. He can both play funny scenes and serious scenes. Plus, I love how he explains at the end of each case the mystery behind it, just like a detective. Even if he often lost to his student Pei Yun Tian, I feel like he always came out as the winner.

The ever gorgeous and talented Yang Rong plays the super kawai Su Lan Yi. First of all, I wanna say that it feels so good to see her play the protagonist, instead of the antagonist . She is a gifted actress and I always want to root for her happiness. So, seen her here as a poor girl, I am more than happy to wish her happiness. Su Lian Yi is the owner of a brothel who falls in love with He Lan Jun. Then, she decides to throw everything aways and to pursue He Lan Jun. She is adorable, always trying to help everyone. I love when she becomes jealous of others. The scene when He Lan Jun declares his love for her was the sweetest scene ever.

Zhang Zhehan, the new recruit of Yumama, is playing Pei Yun Tian in this drama. He starts off being plain evil, but learns to take example from He Lan Jun to become someone who cares about others. Also, I think his love story really made him realize that he has to change himself to be worth the love of his life. For a third character, there sure was a lot of importance given to him (I am not complaining, he is really handsome ^o^)

The picture on top is not actually part of the story, but instead the actors gooffing around on set ^_^

Since this drama was very light hearted, instead of having a main plotline that brings a lot of twist and events to the story, the series is more composed of short story of 2 episodes long each where guest stars came in, often playing couples haiving misundertanding because of appearance. Then, it is the role of our OTP to make them understand their mistakes, change their appearance and then, make them realize that exterior beauty is not everything. Gorgeously well done. Guest stars incude Yuan Shanshan, Luo Jin, Kenny Kwan and Chen Xiang. Also, shoutout to Sheran Tang for playing quiet a comical Wu Zetian.

This drama is like a candy, addictive and making you feel good! I give it a score of 9.5/10 and wish to see more cute drama like this one! Most Ancient dramas are nowadays too centered on revenge, wich can be heavy to watch sometime…

I love this series too! Just the right amount of goofy and romance and drama – also thought the ideal of beauty and relationships in the stories were good.

Me too! I was so surprised I enjoyed it so much (since normally, I don’t really like comedy all that much). I loved the main OTP as they were perfect and their actings can both make you feed sad and make you laugh (really naturally too!). Also, I think that all the small little stories made the drama really easy to watch and I wasn’t bored at all! :3
