  1. This is the ranking for all time online viewing right? I wonder if Nielsen (or other similar company) does the TV rating in China — I would love to know! I also wish there would be a ranking for the combined TV+online viewing.

Hua Qian Gu is really the monster. I’m actually quite surprised to see Bu Bu Jing Xin at no. 20, I would’ve expected it to be placed much higher.

What can I say — Tang Yan is the actual TV queen. Three of her dramas are in the top 10, more than any other actor!

Now I would love to see if this list will have any impact in next year’s Forbes Chinese entertainers rank!

Yes! I would say all time online views. If you look at the complete 232 drama list at the end, there are even some from before 2000.
Nielsen? I never checked that web site? Does it do good rating compilation? TV ratings can easily be found on sites like wikipedia and baidu, but I don’t remember a specific web site the combination work😦
I know! The views are like unreal, probably the most viewed drama in the world (since China has such a huge population). Bubujingxin aired in 2010 so I guess the online viewership back then was not as huge as it is now. But it is definitely a Chinese drama classic. Note that the old Huan Zhu Ge Ge is not even in the top 90s!
I see like 7 Tang Yan dramas up there already @_@ Whatever other says, she is the drama queen.
Sadly, I don’t think this ranking has a huge impact on Forbes, since Forbes also consider entertainment, Movie actors and singers. Drama actors are often paid less than Movie actors… Anyway, I am sure Liying’s ranking will go super high this year :3

      • Nielsen is a survey company, headquartered in the US, but with offices throughout the world. They have global reputation for their TV surveys and viewership ratings, which are used by TV stations and businesses for advertising and others. (Here’s their link http://www.nielsen.com/us/en/about-us.html). To be honest, I don’t know if Nielsen is allowed to operate in China.

Re old Huan Zhu Ge Ge, that’s why I wrote earlier I wish we would have a rating for combined TV+internet viewership. I read that HZGG is still broadcast in some TV stations, even after almost 20 years since it was first aired. I wonder if its rating will be bumped using that method.

Oh nice! It could be very useful indeed. However, I feel like no other international market can compete with China’s views numbers currently and I doubt China would allow a foreign company (especially American) to have access to all those data.:/
Apparently Hunan channel bought the right to the HZGG old version and was broadcasting it every summer since then. However, for the last two years, they did not air the drama. I don’t know why, maybe because they now have the new HZGG version? Or maybe because it doesn’t appeal to the audience like it used to be?
If they use a method of counting the rerunning dramas, then it would not be fair for the low key dramas that won’t get any screen times. What I like with online viewership is that the user can go and find whatever he wants to watch, whenever. Hence, technically, all dramas have the same chance to be watched.😛

Indeed. I’ve been curious about how the tracking works for China. And I’ve read what a monster Journey was but to see the actual numbers and the gap between it and the second place was eye opening. So do they look at viewership for the first ep? Last ep? Or the entire series? I am def wondering how they do it. And NIF is just perfect to me. I hope it will crawl up the list some. And as for TY. I’ve yet to complete a full series of hers. I think she is pretty. I think she has picked some great dramas and actors to wrk with… But I have not been able to sit through or marathon an entire series with her in it. Perfect Couple. Diamond Lover. Lady & Liar. Legend of Fragrance. You are My Sunshine was the closest. I skipped a few ep and watched the last 30 minutes. She must have an amazing agency to stay so booked and land these heavy hitting shows.

They look for the entire series. I think they add up all the views for each episodes (not sure though because that would be unfair to the dramas with less episodes). I think the drama of Hu Ge such as Nirvana in Fire will definitely go up. It is just a matter of time since it just finished airing recently. With only two weeks of broadcast, I bet most viewers will try to watch online instead.
I think the only drama I finished where TY starred was in Chinese Paladin 3. I think she acts well and is very pretty. But I just can’t stand her acting of the perfect innocent girl that everyone loves without any effort. Which is the only role she takes it seems. I am expecting her next one, Princess of Weiyoung to surprise me :3
Actually, she is in her own agency.😛 A lot of actors/actresses do that when they shot to stardom. (e.g. Yang Mi, Wallace Huo)

Ooh. Same here. Glad you mentioned it. I too, am hoping her new princess drama will be good. I think it was mentioned that it is based off a novel so I read it. I liked it cause the character gets even with everyone at start of the story. One of the reason I enjoyed NIF is cause based off when the drama starts, the bad guys start dropping like flies (not really a spoiler right?). Justice is served cold and ruthless ASAP. None of the good guy gets trampled upon for 3/4 of the story and then the last bit comes back to get even. And with the bromance and loyalty, well, it just makes so much even better.

And it makes sense with what you said about how the view works. I popped over to vlinkage and see that it’s the China based streaming sites. Now, can we get a global aggregate? Haha.

Really? That drama sounds good! They better cast a good male lead and I will definitely watch it. :3 No problem with the spoilers. I will be watching it in December so I will probably forget them by then 8D (I really have a bad memory). From what you are saying, it sounds like a mix of Three Kingdoms with some really nice bromance :3
As for the aggregation proposition: if only those data gathering sites work together… Sigh, I see so many different tables that I am also confused. I think vlinkage is very reliable though since it is basing itself on 8-9 main online streaming websites.

@archidisign: for some reason there is no reply link when I tried to respond to your last post. I had to sleep on your response and rechecked previous posts. Wow. You got a lot of shows to catch up in December. NIF is just amazeballs. I know folks have been saying it and I have been saying it. It is just so worth your time. So. I never read all 120 chapters of romance of the three kingdoms but I know enough of the stories. I haven’t picked up reading NIF either (kind of glad I didn’t cause I liked the level of romance in the drama – as light as it is; it’s more so than the book). For a drama adoptation, NIF was done just right. It’s in my top 2 of all Asian dramas. Quality production. Can’t wait to hear your thoughts come December.

:S I think wordpress doesn’t allow a comment to have too many replies😥 Luckily, as admin of the blog, I can still do it! 3:D
Yes I do!! I need to watch Nirvana in Fire, Legend of Zhu (S), and Love Me if You Dare. I am actually following Good Time right now with my parents (saw two episodes so far) while eating supper and I just took off YZG from my to watch list. I want Christmas to come fast!! Thanks to all the recommendations, NIF is definitely my #1 drama to start with during winter break.

Excellent. I wanted to say to take off YZG (or stop watching it) cause at some point it’s better to cut off your loss. I dropped it after one episode and focused my attention else where. I am watching Good Times as well but am stuck on the third or fourth episode. I will prob continue as I am marathoning T drama When I see You Again. It’s cute and light. Not too draggy and it could be full of super angst but it hasn’t gone that way so far. Besides Jasper is easy on the eyes with his dimples and smile.

I dropped Legend of Zhu after 8 episodes when I realized that part 1 is only 10 episodes. The Fx is cheesy. The costume and makeup is cheesy. But I am watching it for the the female lead so may continue down the line.

Love Me if You Dare is on my list. Not enough episodes per week so I am holding out to queue it up. Patience is such a virtue.

T drama Bromance is good so far. She can absolutely pass for a guy. Along with J drama 5-9 and Mature Girls, I am watching it when it’s uploaded. So happy subs come on so fast in Chinese for J and K dramas now.

So yay for NIF. Def worth the time to watch it. Just note you may end up marathoning it. Hehe.

Haha. I agree and thanks for the good advice. It is really too bad though, since the casting was so great! Rahhh, Yumama, you did it again = another failure with my faves…😥
I love how the cast of Good Time have great acting skills. It is amazing! However, the plot is really your average Chinese modern drama. It is addictive for no good reasons.😛 I don’t really like the personality of the female lead. She is so rude sometime! I know she has a soft heart and is really nice inside, but gosh, she comes out so annoying. Whatever she says sounds like she is trying to attack the other person…
I just read the synopsis for the drama When I see You Again and for Bromance. Sounds really good! I am down to give it a try 8D I need some really really easy drama for the soul right now. Omg, I just realized how long since I watched a TWdrama (the last one was In a Good Way).
I want to wait for all episodes to come out to watch it. I may watch it when it will be broadcast on TV so that I can follow it with the audience and get into the crazy shipping mode!
And for sure, I will keep NIF for winter watch. I don’t want to get addicted when it is still school/midterm/final season v__v
