[Ep 35 Final fast recap+discussion(?)][Spoilers!!]Go Princess Go

1

Ok, this is a new try. If nobody watched this web drama, than this discussion corner will only have me. LOL. Hope it wouldn’t be the case though. Anyway, today on January 15th 2016 was released the final episode of the veryyy popular web drama Go Princess Go 太子妃升職記 with its 35th episode. If you didn’t check it and want to do so, MapleStage has links for it here. Initially I wanted to write recaps for this drama, but then forgot to do so because classed started…😥

I am gonna write this post like a fast summary/recap and then give my thoughts.

The story is about a modern playboy (I don’t remember his name). While trying to escape his girlfriend’s friends at a party, he falls in the pool and gets K.Oed. Tada! He is transported back to [I am not sure which] dynasty… in the body of the crown princess!! Of course, he is born a man mentally speaking and the 35 episodes web drama is about his struggle with his new identity and his try at plotting against her (I am gonna use female gender to describe the main character from now on) fiance, the crown prince. She will get entangled in a love triangle between her, the crown prince and the Nine Prince (9 Wang).

The drama is colorful, full of fun modern references, has some really awesome scenes and isn’t shy about sex scenes. A great watch I recommend to everyone. During the past few weeks, it was probably the most watched drama online and got A LOT of attention on weibo for connecting well with the younger audience (compared to the more heavy Mi Yue Zhuan for example).

Characters:

  • Qi Sheng/emperor played by Sheng Yilun
  • Zhang Pengpeng/empress played by Zhang Tian Ai
  • Nine Prince (9 Wang) played by Yu Menglong

Episode 35 Recap:

Episode starts with the Emperor coming to see Pengpeng. He asks her since when did she fall in love with him. She says she isn’t sure either, but when she saw him save her life (by protecting her against the arrow), she knew she loved him. However, she also specifies that due to their identity, she can only love her half-heartedly since she needs to be careful in the palace against the palace and to be a good empress. Hearing this, the emperor is disappointed as he wanted to have her whole heart. The only way for her to give him her whole heart is if he wasn’t the emperor. Mad, the emperor dismissed his harem.

123

We move up in years as the new crown prince grew older. He is a bit playboy (like his mother), but is also a great student at learning Chinese (like his father). Seeing that, Pengpeng is very happy and smile by herself. She dismisses her son.

45

At night, a mysterious man in black comes into Pengpeng’s room and kidnapps her. She smiles thinking it is Yang Yin (her friend who left the palace and who used to come to her room often to give her meat xD). However, turns out it is the emperor! Emperor asks her if she was expecting someone else and she says no. She says that what the emperor is doing for her is romantic. Awwnn. He tells her he had prepared everything for them to leave the palace and to live happily ever after on an isolated mountain. She says he must be kidding and he says that no, he wants her whole heart. And he knows the crown prince is in good care in the palace and they can live alone together now. Pengpeng happily agrees.

9

Then, it seems like they are having the perfect life, dancing tango together, learning English, cosplaying as Koreans, emperor hiding to drink a bit of wine, etc.

On the day of Pengpeng’s birthday, Qi Sheng aka the ex-emperor prepared for her a romantic birthday: he prepared a heart shaped installation with pedals of roses inside. Seeing that Pengpeng is super happy and stands on it.

2

However, while they are celebrating, assassins come in and kills Pengpeng. =_= Before Pengpeng dies, she tells Qi Sheng to run away, but he refuses. He cries his soul out in desesperation. When the assassions arrive, they kill Qi Sheng and just doesn’t want to live his body alone, slashing it over and over again. They die together.

345

Then flash to the present where Pengpeng’s male form wakes up from his coma (?). He walks around looking for the past. He goes back to the pool were he got his accident. He jumps in it, goes back to the past and there is a lot of flashbacks that comes back to him. As he stand in the palace setting, the drama ends.

Thoughts:

WTF?? Sorry, but seriously? I started this episode all happy to see some cute scenes of the OTP (and the first half nearly gave so many sweet scenes!!) and then, Pengpeng dies?? and then, the emperor dies? And then, we learn that all this is a dream? Or maybe it is not a dream?? Maybe the modern male version went back to the pool to commit suicide? I am in utter confusion right now. I totally enjoyed watching this drama and would love a follow-up. Apparently it is possible they air another ending, but who knows…  Did anyone read the novel and can tell me what is the actual ending? [wow, sorry about that, so many questions in one paragraph].

Ep.36 Spoiler: Our two men meet in modern time.

  1. Omg I was SOOO confused too!! I was all happy with the OTP and then assassins come out of no where?!? Who are they and why are they there? How did they even know about their happy place?😦 I don’t remember the king and queen having much enemies or anyone in specific. The ending was such a mess that I can’t even begin to understand it. >.<

I don’t understand the assassin part. First of all, how can they not had predicted it? They are both veryy smart ^3^ Also, why? They are well loved and the only person who could had done that would be Nine Prince who hated Qi Sheng, but still that doesn’t make sense either since Pengpeng also died. I guess it is their way of giving us a bad ending…

Yes! because it is really good ^^
I am surprised there is nobody doing sub for it since 1) it is super popular! 2) it is easy to understand and 3) it is very short (20min/episode for 35 episodes). xD Finish, NIF and try this out after. It is not hard to understand and feel free to comment here: I would be happy to explain if there is something you don’t understand😛

    • If I may suggest something that might help non-Chinese speakers (like myself). The bloggers in Dramakiwi and Ninja Reflection make recaps up to ep 23. While the hilarity also comes from the absurdities (clothing, set, etc.) and the acts, the recaps help tremendously for the context. I also wish it will finally get English subbed, because I’m sure I’ve missed a lot of jokes in the conversations.

I am so confused too. I decided to watch this drama due to all the hype, and I loved it. It’s so different, but the ending threw me off. What even happened? I have to say, both the 9th prince and the emperor are very good-looking and decent actors. Hope to see them in future projects!

Haha, same case. This caught my attention with all the hype over it. The ending is indeed weird, but at least, they had a second ending. But the second ending isn’t a 100% satisfying either v_v rahhh!
I am sure our trio from this drama will get tons of projects soon enough ^^

    Hi there

I’ve been following this drama almost religiously and despite my limited or rather kindergarten level Chinese I found it extremely easy to follow.

Of course I had some help as I’ve participated in another forum to assist with some of the more difficult words. Overall, it’s been an amazing webdrama and I absolutely LOVE it!!!

Don’t worry you are not alone in your fandom, there is an English facebook page dedicated to GPG.

So here are my thoughts and views about the drama and as you’ve already mentioned in your subject title that it’s a spoiler discussion so I can happily disclose whatever I want without any repercussion.

To be honest, I’m not a fan of Boy Love as depicted by the novel but I’ve been reading some of the websites that was hilarious and since I was on my holiday break I thought I’ll give this drama a chance. Oh boy – did it shine, I was bedazzled and above all it was absolutely entertaining!!!
Despite not having any English subtitles I watched it from beginning to end.

I so badly wanted to recommend it to my friends but due to the premises of the drama being rather unique I was just too shy. Although I am open to new and innovative ideas I am still somewhat rather conservative when it come to BL themes.

Nevertheless I am so pleased that remained open-minded about the whole BL concept, Because it was too overt in the drama allowing some very funny moments between crown princess and prince. Having said that, and despite the rather ambiguous relationship I must admit that it’s done in such a way that I found very sweet and cute. Much to my surprise and delight I sat through 20 episodes straight thoroughly enjoying the development between crown prince and crown princess. The chemistry between the main lead is wonderful and very believable. I undoubtedly have some favourite scenes and I have gone back to re-watch some of them.

I was so curious as to what changed his(her) mind to wholeheartedly to love the crown prince and now having watched all of the episodes I too would have fallen for the crown prince.

Speaking of the crown prince, I love how refined, sophisticated and handsome he was! Just how I imagined a crown prince to look like during that period.

As for the actor, I was very impressed. For someone so young (the actor’s only 23) he’s carried himself very well during the drama and I found him very charismatic and such a good-looking crown prince. I absolutely loved his dubbed voice it matched his stature and exactly how a crown prince should sound. Admittedly, I was rather smitten with this contained young man. I will definitely look out for this new actor!

As I predicted, this drama has definitely brought stardom to a relatively unknown cast. I just knew that it would gain the popularity I envisioned as soon as I watched it. As for the female lead. I initially thought she was only pretty and rather average but after watching a few episodes she’s simply awesome!!! I realised how beautiful she is, it’s no wonder crown prince was enthralled and captivated by her. I love how she manages to change her look with the different outfits and hairstyle. Of course the gaudy gowns and modern outfits which were suppose to look out of place with the ancient backdrop just fitted perfectly with the style and tone of this drama. Needless to say, I love the splashes of the colour in the background (so vibrant) and the modern costumes which looked beautiful on both the crown prince (oh the breastplate!!) and princess.

I admit there were times I’ve forgotten that the crown princess was really a man and the romantic scenes were wonderfully played out and unexpectedly unique and not cliche.

I would like to comment further but I should give you an opportunity to respond🙂

      Hello! ^^
Wow, you wrote a lot (sorry if I can’t answer to everything). Me too, my Chinese is at the beginner (near intermediate now) level. But this was the easiest Chinese period drama to follow ever! There is a forum/fb page for this drama? I tried to find other blogs discussing about it, but didn’t find any. Hence why I decided to write this post myself.
I agree, it is hard to describe this drama. I am not that into boy-boy love (unless we are talking about bromance) so I didn’t want to watch it at first. But then, with all the hype, it was time for me to check it: WORTH IT! My friend (who by the way likes yaoi stuff) enjoyed it too.
There were so many funny moments between the crown princess and the crown prince or her with the nine prince. Time just flew so fast while watching and I watched like 10 episodes in one seating. At first, I thought to myself, how am I going to ship them? They are all boys!! But then, I started to develop a major girl crush on Pengpeng and totally agree with the crown prince over falling for her. Haha, should I question my sexuality? Her dresses were really pretty too and didn’t get shy at showing some skin!
In a lot of Chinese dramas, the crown prince are losers. It is a nice change to see the perfect future emperor for once. He is so handsome (and also very manly😉 ) Me too, I will look out for him! There are already so many new bias this year for me and I am happy GPG made me discover such an awesome OTP.

    Sorry I can’t help myself.

I’m absolutely delighted that you’ve enjoyed the drama and it’s nice to know that there are other people who also has interesting taste😛
    😛
I was thinking about the whole premises of sexuality. It does beg the questions if our sexuality is determined by physical appearance or is a mental state. Certainly I’m of the opinion that most behaviours, although learned, are dictated by social norms.

I am tickled pink by the thought that c.prince is a latent boy lover considering he did’t pay much attention to c.princess before she ‘turned’. Oh so many closets to open.

Aside from the hilarious moments as in episode 6-7, where c.princess in her drunken stupor unknowingly does the deed with c.prince and pretty much announces it to the whole world by shouting it out, but then the next scenes had me in stitches. She’s vomiting like crazy in the basin. From her expression, the mere thought of having done the deed, and with a man, renders her quite ill and sends her clutching again at the basin was hilarious. I’m still chuckling.
Then the soccer scene. C.princess smirks confidently that c.prince challenges her to a ball game but then she misses the ball at every turn…oh dear that was so funny and she’s trying really, really hard too. I don’t know how c.prince kept a straight face all this time – it was hilarious.

My favourite parts are the romantic scenes. It only seems to get better and hotter. The secret is the chemistry between the leads. The chemistry increases with time and at every scene. I love their interactions – it’s so darn cute and sweet but definitely not cringe-worthy. Even the awkward kiss in episode 9 was done with perfect timing and with just the right amount of man-handling.
I really like panorama of emotions played by both leads. On one hand, c.princess has no idea and simply doesn’t care that c.prince is falling for her. Whilst this drives c.prince simply crazy and he’s mad with frustration. But then he doesn’t know why he’s angry and frustrated The interchange is so fun to watch and you’re almost guarantee that hilarity will follow suit.

I did note previously that I am smitten with c.prince. He’s so darn good-looking and I love the way he looks at c.princess. It’s definitely swoon-worthy.

No need to be sorry!😀 “interesting taste” We must be a weird generation then because, in China, the younger generation is totally loving it (and maybe even the older generation too?)
Yes, it is so rare for cdrama to talk about sexuality or just saying that one is gay. And this drama did a great job at doing that, so good I hope it won’t get into any problem with the Chinese government. Most behaviours are dedicated by what we see and entertainment/media is definitely a key element at telling us what to think (consciously or not).
I think the crown prince fell in love with her new personality: is he more into her boyish or her modern personality? Pengpeng became more and more feminine, so much that in ep35, I felt like she was more girly than me!! She even enjoyed her love making scene with the crown prince later on (ep 24 I think?). I also loved the way the love part was showed, it was done naturally and full of chemistry.
ps; I love the crown prince’s straight face.❤

  8. I dropped Miyue just to watch this due to all the hype, and let me just say that I do not regret my decision at all because I was extremely impressed by how addicting and entertaining the web drama turned out to be. The male lead is so charismatic, and same for the female lead. She’s so beautiful and I love her strong features (kind of reminds me of Viann Zhang’s looks, but better imo). One thing I really like is how they’re really open with mature contents and how well the drama connects with the younger audience, not to mention the uniqueness, hence the hype and popularity. I’m only on ep 17, but I know I am going to be disappointed at the ending. I wonder if the reason why the ending was so messy was due to the low budget? Def going to write a review on this once i finish it.

Apparently, Mi Yue Zhuan started to get bad as the story goes on so you didn’t miss much! I also find the crown prince and princess are a perfect match and seeing them grow closer and closer is just so sweet!! I know! She is so tall and pretty. I would put her, physically speaking, in the same category as Viann Zhang. Excited to see her future projects! And the crown prince is so damn hot. Oof, big love for him too. They are very open with mature and modern issues (especially sexuality) so of course, thumbs up from me.
Sorry for the spoilers! :S I don’t think it is because of the budget since they managed to do the whole drama really well without it. I think it is just their artistic liberty? As it is shown, they are quiet bold when it comes to being creative xD
Happy to read your review soon ^^ Hope you will take better screenshots than me!

      • Miyue Zhuan bored me so much. I felt extremely underwhelmed when I had found out that it’d be over 80 episodes, especially for a damn palace drama (not even an interesting one). The other thing that bothered me a bit was the time period. IMO, palace dramas are more interesting when they’re set during the Qing dynasty. This one being set in Qin feels…weird, for some reason lol.

I’ve fallen in love with both the actor who plays the crown prince/emperor and Zhang Tian Ai. It’s impressive how they’re new in the industry, yet are able to portray their roles pretty well. Looking forward for more drama offers given to them!
Haha, don’t worry about it. I’ve already been spoiled on my Weibo dashboard, seeing posts about being disappointed with the ending. I’m just hoping the alternate ending will be much better…

(Btw, did you read the updates regarding the Tzuyu scandal? Apparently, Chinese and TW govt settled the issue and it’s being cleared up. Chinese govt censored her name from Weibo and are deleting hate comments toward her. CCTV is also showing Twice’s performances/MV. Glad it’s getting better!)

Alternate ending is coming from the director. It has nothing to do with the threats he gotten about this ending. Haha. He made two cuts and planned releasing it within a day of each other. It should be released tonight/tomorrow.

The book has a happy ending. The emperor (aka the crown prince) fakes his death and leaves the throne to their son. She also finds out she is pregnant again. She laments a bit and voila he returns to her. Tada. The end.

Clarification from drama adaptation: He/She didn’t travel back in time. It was more along the lines of transporting of the soul to a different body and the gatekeeper bringing his soul back into the crown princess’. The crown prince does find out and accept that she was a he. They had quite a few number of kids and ends up together. Alive.

Oh thanks Cat!!! I could kiss the director right now! I’ve read that they will release a season 2 of GPG due to its popularity. However it’s set in modern times. I’m a little dubious about a sequel. since been badly burnt by SWAK and BBJX which just suck! Sorry for fans who liked it but I was too disappointed to say otherwise.

      • Cat says:

Agreed. Both swak and bbjx didn’t live up to the original. I did like parts of bbjx like the part of how she missed and loved 4th. How it relates back to the original in the uncut version. Then the whole twin thing. Loss of memory. Reconstructive surgery. Blah. Blah. SWAK should’ve just ended. It was fine. Cause I read the book and edited the ending to my liking.

As for GPG, I also dropped Miyue and started GPG for fun. I did so on the first day of release. And followed it as soon as new episodes air. Every so often someone on weibo would share their letv login info so I get to watch it without having to wait for uploads. Now if only those login still works for this very last piece!

I totally spammed my very non-Asian friends about this show. Yeah. They were amused with what I shared but they don’t get it. This drama is just freaken hilarious and awesome. So creative. Hoping this second ending is better!

Cat, you are always so ressorceful *_* Haha, strong mentally to ignore the threat😉 That second ending doesn’t make me a 100% happy, but at least, it keeps my imagination going. It means that Pengpeng after going back to her man body meets Dr. Qi Sheng. After they start an homosexual relationship and live happily everly after, right?
I would rather have the novel ending with happily everly after on that mountain with lots of beautiful kids.
Aww, they should had added those scenes to the drama to make it more clear (the faking death part and the gatekeeper one). It would make the story so much more coherent! And would make the crown prince even more cool for accepting she as a he!

That’s great news! Go Princess Go went from a web drama to an actual drama in the last few weeks (in the sense that public channel bought the rights to air it on small screen). But know that I follow c-entertainment, I feel like my mandarin is improving little by litte.
Recommendations… It depends on what you like. I will suggest you easy and fun to watch dramas. I loved the drama Boss&Me with Zhao Liying and Zhang Han and it was really addicting to watch. If you are looking for web drama, Crazy for Palace 2 with Deng Sha is quiet good too. Other funny ones would be the old my Bratty Princess with Alec Su and Jang Nara. I think I because obseesed with Shen Yilun and Zhang Tian Ai… What should I do? He is so perfect :xxx The ending was okay, I find it too typical and it does not leave much room for imagination. However, I enjoy rewatching some of the scenes 8D

      • Gahh, I just finished this and I dare to say that this will be one of my fave (or even my ultimate fave) dramas of 2016 when we reach the end of the year. Current problem is that I can’t seem to get over it >< and it doesn't help that I'm checking out interviews and BTS videos of this…Zhang Tianai and Sheng Yilun have so many adorable interactions, including on Weibo! Can't wait for their appearance on HC!

Haha, there are actually so many dramas waiting to get released in 2016 and I have some very anticipated one. But definitely nothing that can be as addicting to this one (cause GPG is just wayy too unique!) Don’t get over it until after the Happy Camp episode will be released. Or else, you will have to go through it all over again.

There’s a third ending! There’s also a translation of the novel’s ending found on Ninja Reflection’s blog site. That’s where I read it. I absolutely loved this web drama too! Although the colors were a bit bright, it was fun to watch.

    • Yes I saw! I talked about it real quick in our latest Ent Update, but Ninja Reflection definitely did a better job. Here is the link if you want to see it in action:

Haha, yes! The colors are so bright it was like looking at a fashion show! Me no complaining! Hope there will be more fun dramas like this one ^^
